With the joy of Carmageddon behind us (tell us how you celebrated!), it’s time to start thinking about the future. A future which, in Los Angeles, will hopefully include some better transit options. But L.A., as we all know, was built for cars, from the country’s first freeway to the extra-wide side streets. To move this city forward, we first have to consider what Los Angeles would be like with fewer cars. We’re partnering with Rethink LA: Perspectives on a Future City, an exhibition which opens at the A+D Museum in August, to imagine the city when it has moved beyond cars.

Our contributing Business Editor Alex Goldmark found this protest-meets-Johnny Knoxville video about the laws and safety of bike lanes in New York City. He writes:

Here’s an outlandish protest video from Casey Neistat, professional viral video maker (of the Niestat Brothers show on HBO). In it, he films himself getting a ticket for not riding in the bike lane in New York City—an NYPD practice I brought to light on Transportation Nation, andGOOD a few months back.

These days there’s a lot of energy going into how to get kids interested in science, technology, engineering, and math—the so-called STEM subjects. Part of the challenge is image. The stereotype of the unattractive, withdrawn nerd proving geometric theories in her head isn’t the most attractive role model. That’s where examples like the above tricked-out bike constructed by UPENN engineering students could help out.

Armed with our bikes, our bus passes, our carpools, and our plain old feet, GOOD staffers are attempting to make it a full four weeks keeping our personal car use to a minimum. (GOOD developer Ben Callaway, for instance, has pledged to not drive to work more than once for the whole month.) If you know Los Angeles, with its sprawl and its dearth of public transportation, you know this is going to be hard. But that’s why we call it a challenge.

As usual, consider The GOOD Challenge an opportunity to experiment with changes in your own community. It might not change your life, but it will definitely change your month.

Like all Chinese cities, Guangzhou has seen an explosion in automobile ownership over the past decade. This combined with rapid growth in demand for the bus system lead to terrible congestion and safety issues on Zhongshan Avenue, a major street through the Central Business District. Zhongshan Avenue is no longer a nightmare of traffic and pollution, but rather a vibrant commercial avenue.
