- Corinna Loo shared in Politics, Lgbt and Lgbtq
The Supreme Court issued rulings on two highly-anticipated cases on gay marriage today. By 5-4, it ruled the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman, is unconstitutional.
In a separate ruling, it declined to take on the broader issue of gay marriage. The court decided that supporters of Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot measure that had outlawed same-sex marriages in the California, did not have standing to bring the case to the court.
National Coming Out Day: Why Celebrating This Radical Act is More Relevant Than Ever
I came out to my parents during my final year of seminary in North Carolina—almost a decade ago. After fumbling and mumbling about my “friend” who they had met earlier in the year, I managed to blurt out that my “friend” and I were “more than friends” and that I was gay.
My mom ended the conversation right then and there. “I don’t want to talk about this any more,” she said. My dad? He offered to help me do my taxes. After sweating and pacing and feeling my heart in my throat for day, it was an anti-climactic moment that my parents and I are still working our way through. Each time we visit together, I have to come out again and again. It’s gotten easier for me with each passing year—but for too many young people across this country, it hasn’t.
Every year since 1988, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans have celebrated National Coming Out Day. Far from a hokey chance to sell merchandise, National Coming Out Day is a celebration of a radical act.
Announcing Coding for GOOD: 16 Steps to Become a Coder
GOOD and Apollo Group are excited to announce the launch of Coding for GOOD, an opportunity to gain skills in coding and, for one lucky participant, a chance to work with us here at GOOD. It’s our effort to bridge the skills gap through real-world application.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn what goes on behind the scenes of your favorite websites or apps, now is your chance. And guess what, it’s really not as hard as you think. Through Coding for GOOD you’ll learn step-by-step in easy to follow lessons the rules for HTML, CSS, Java Script and how to use APIs.
To get started, you’ll need to work your way through the sixteen free coding lessons found here. Each lesson will walk you through the topic and give you a challenge to test what you’ve learned. If you get stuck, each challenge has a video to help you along.
Then, starting Monday, December 3 you’ll have a chance to be hired onto the GOOD Tech team as a junior engineer. Just showcase your mastery of all of the lessons by submitting a final project and a panel of judges will select three candidates to be flown to Los Angeles in January to compete in the hack-a-thon. The winner will have the opportunity to join the team of coders here at GOOD.
So, what are you waiting for? Get started on your coding lessons here.

Coding for GOOD: The Results are In, Meet Our Winner
- GOOD Partnerships wrote in Education Los Angeles and Hack A Thon
Last October, GOOD and Apollo Group announced the launch of Coding for GOOD, an opportunity to gain skills in coding and, for one lucky participant, a chance to work with us here at GOOD. The program is our effort to bridge the skills gap through real-world application.
Participants had eight weeks to take sixteen free coding lessons and submit a final project using the skills they learned. This past weekend the top three finalists were flown to Los Angeles for a hack-a-thon at the Google offices.
And now, after months of learning lessons and a busy weekend of developing, we are happy to announce that the Coding for GOOD winner is…
For every issue, GOOD chooses a quote for the magazine spine that speaks to the current theme. For GOOD Magazine Issue029: The Exploration Issue, Editor-in-Chief Josh Neuman looked to Dr. Seuss for inspiration.

Let’s Fix It: Fall 2013, GOOD Magazine’s (Re)design Issue
- Joshua Neuman wrote in Design, Good Magazine and Subscribe
The (Re)design Issue tells a DIO (do-it-ourselves) design story that not only chronicles the ways in which design thinking is being deployed all over the world, but also calls you, the GOOD community, to take part in its deployment.
That DIO story is a thread that winds itself throughout the issue. It runs through Chelsea Roff’s story about how you can redesign your well-being; it runs through our roundtable with GOOD’s first-ever Global Exchange Fellows who are redesigning the way we think about neighborhoods; you hear it in Ralph Nader’s recollections of the doomed Chevy Corvair on its 50th anniversary; you see it in Bethlehem Shoals’ essay on the championship legacy of the NBA coaching collaboration of Phil Jackson and Tex Winter, who effectively redesigned teamwork; and we hope you will take part in it as you explore our 14-page feature on half-baked solutions.
For the designers among you, we expect you’ll notice the (Re)design Issue pushing against the boundaries of what constitutes a “design problem.” Our hope is that all of you begin thinking a little bit more like designers. We think our planet needs it.
