Who says black kids from Brooklyn only listen to (or create) hip hop? Two talented 12-year-olds, Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins of the band ‘Unlocking the Truth" are absolutely destroying played-out musical stereotypes with their serious heavy metal skills. Sure, they get bullied for rocking guitars and black nail polish, but check 'em out and you’ll see that their skill is undeniable.

What makes the verdict all the more more painful is that the situation that led to Trayvon Martin’s death is one that is very familiar to me. I have walked in George Zimmerman’s shoes. I have been on block patrol in my Brooklyn neighborhood. I’ve escorted very tough kids off my block when they’ve come to cause trouble. I’ve run basketball leagues in tough neighborhoods where I’ve had to make peace with neighborhood drug dealers.

If that were me on patrol, nothing would have happened to Trayvon Martin. There would have been no reason for me to approach him because he was doing nothing wrong. However, let’s say that I decided to do so anyway. I would have approached him politely with an air of confidence and concern, as one physically confident person to another, showing him respect. And Trayvon, like the hundreds of the young people I have dealt with from comparable backgrounds, would have shown me respect back—because he was merely an innocent teenager walking home from the corner store with a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea.

I don’t think I had specific expectations of neighborliness when I first moved from California to New York. If someone had asked me, I would have probably guessed that things in my new neighborhood wouldn’t have been that different from parts of the Bay Area; a steady flow of people moving in and out of apartments on the block, and people often passing each other on the street with heads down, without stopping to say hello. 

Instead, I ended up in a neighborhood that reminds me of Sesame Street…

None of my mostly African American 11th graders in Portland had ever heard of the so-called Tulsa Race Riot, even though it stands as one of the most violent episodes of dispossession in U.S. history.

The term “race riot” does not adequately describe the events of May 31-June 1, 1921 in Greenwood, a black neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In fact, the term itself implies that both blacks and whites might be equally to blame for the lawlessness and violence. The historical record documents a sustained and murderous assault on black lives and property. This assault on Greenwood was met by a brave but unsuccessful armed defense of their community by some black World War I veterans and others.

During the night and day of the riot, deputized whites killed more than 300 African Americans. They looted and burned to the ground 40 square blocks of 1,265 African American homes, including hospitals, schools, and churches, and destroyed 150 businesses. White deputies and members of the National Guard arrested and detained 6,000 black Tulsans, who were released only upon being vouched for by a white employer or other white citizen. Nine thousand African Americans were left homeless and lived in tents well into the winter of 1921.

For the past two years, on (almost) every fourth Saturday of the month, our apartment turns into a part-time restaurant. Sixteen to 20 people show up at our gate over by the Domino Sugar Factory, tucked under the Williamsburg Bridge, to eat with people they’ve never met. We call it Neighbor.

The first dinner was nerve wracking. We spent all week preparing. We went through the schedule over and over and over and over again. We worried about everything. Who would come? Will they think it’s weird? Will they like the food?
