Why Supporting Your Local Library Is the Ultimate Homage to Ray Bradbury
“When I graduated from high school in 1938, I began going to the library three nights a week,” said Bradbury. “I did this every week for almost ten years and finally, in 1947, around the time I got married, I figured I was done. So I graduated from the library when I was twenty-seven. I discovered that the library is the real school.”

As we wind down our efforts to get to space on our own, it’s good to remember that we’ll now be carpooling, which will cost us only a cool $63 million per trip compared to our average launch cost of $1.5 billion.
Some of us in the office aren’t that sad to see the launches come to an end.
Most of us are still trying to figure out what happened to our dreams of space, and exactly how it is we can get there still. Luckily we have a flowchart for that.
It’s been a rough week for those of us who still harbor childhood dreams of a career in outer space. NASA is about to launch its second-to-last shuttle mission and isn’t even accepting applications from aspiring astronauts. Plus the hunt for extraterrestrial life is on hold due to budget cuts. The Legacy of Sally Ride, the First American Woman in Space
In 1983 every American woman who’d ever been told that she wasn’t good at science, technology, engineering, or math cheered as Sally Ride broke the astronautical glass ceiling with her journey aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Ride, who died on Monday at the age of 61 after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, will forever be known as the first American woman in space. That’s more notable than what most of us will ever accomplish in our lives, but Ride’s legacy extends beyond what she achieved as an astronaut.
NASA’s shuttle program may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a whole universe left to explore—and a whole new generation of astronomers and astronauts to get excited about life beyond our chunk of rock. Now, thanks to 10 years of work on the part of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, budding scientists will now have a better picture, literally, of what’s out there than we’ve ever had. Sometimes it’s easy to make fun of the government’s science projects. It was easy to make fun of the kids who crushed it at the science fair in elementary school too, but the kid with the functioning marshmallow cannon probably has a much cooler job than you do today. Now, a rare bipartisan coalition of politicians—plus an assortment of scientists, universities, and business leaders—are reminding us that when it comes to doing our research homework, it’s better to take the long view: Even weird science projects can pay off big down the road.
