Julia Bluhm of tiny Waterville, Maine was fed up with opening the pages of Seventeen Magazine to find pixel perfect images of girls touched up and thinned down with the magic wand of Photoshop. So she did what any social media savvy young person would—she ascended her digital soapbox. Nearly 86,000 Change.org petition signatures later, her digital organizing has rattled the windows of a 17th floor Manhattan office.

The (Re)design Issue tells a DIO (do-it-ourselves) design story that not only chronicles the ways in which design thinking is being deployed all over the world, but also calls you, the GOOD community, to take part in its deployment.
That DIO story is a thread that winds itself throughout the issue. It runs through Chelsea Roff’s story about how you can redesign your well-being; it runs through our roundtable with GOOD’s first-ever Global Exchange Fellows who are redesigning the way we think about neighborhoods; you hear it in Ralph Nader’s recollections of the doomed Chevy Corvair on its 50th anniversary; you see it in Bethlehem Shoals’ essay on the championship legacy of the NBA coaching collaboration of Phil Jackson and Tex Winter, who effectively redesigned teamwork; and we hope you will take part in it as you explore our 14-page feature on half-baked solutions.
For the designers among you, we expect you’ll notice the (Re)design Issue pushing against the boundaries of what constitutes a “design problem.” Our hope is that all of you begin thinking a little bit more like designers. We think our planet needs it.

Last year a Google map proved once and for all that no matter how deep American children dug holes in their backyards, they would never reach China. The antipode (diametric opposite) for most of the United States, the map showed, would have them emerging salivating for egg rolls beneath the Indian Ocean. I doubt this is crushing many kids’ dreams these days, since the world as we know it has become such a smaller place in the last generation. But what does the smallness of the planet—and its increased interconnectedness—mean for the spirit of exploration?
Well, as you might’ve guessed, we believe that the spirit of exploration is alive and well—even if it’s less connected with earthly terrain. And even though you read a bound magazine but surf the endless web, we set out to prove that the spirit of exploration can flourish within the confines of the print medium.

It’s almost four months to the day that I stood alongside my daughter and PETA volunteers, protesting the National Rifle Association’s tacky and ludicrous press conference a week after the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre. That week, NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre poked fingers at video game violence, lambasted the media, and recommended armed guards in our schools. Just blocks from the White House, he ranted in a hotel ballroom while my baby slept bundled in her snowsuit and stroller with me outside. I held a sign that said “Teach kindness, not killing.”
Now, I gather up the surprising lightness of my rented gun, take aim, and fire again. Another slug blasts through the middle of my paper friend.
It has been a strange few months.
Meet the least likely group in the U.S. that one would expect to be embracing guns —liberals.

He laughed and thought about it. “Yes, if I start to think I have to say something I do, but I’m very reluctant to because whatever I say about another human being is very limiting. The same human being in time can change. Let’s say five years later you can change completely, and the potential for change may have been there. Every judgment is like tearing a little piece out of a big painting and saying, ‘That’s how it is.’”
Self-help guru Eckhart Tolle became an international sensation in 2008 when Oprah plugged his book The Power of Now as a must-read. Journalist Claire Hoffman looks back to 2008 —pitting an interview with the elusive Tolle and his emphasis on living in “the Now” against the zeitgeist surrounding the 2008 financial crisis, tracking Tolle’s meteoric rise.
