This YouTube Stunt Helped a Student Get Off Michigan’s Waitlist
When Lawrence Yong, a student at Granada Hills Charter High School in Los Angeles, realized he was one of thousands of students on the University of Michigan’s waitlist, he took a 21st century-style approach. Yong sent the school a YouTube link of him singing his heart out in a Michigan-flavored cover of the Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back.” The video went viral and it worked: Yong got a spot in the 2012 freshman class.

Latest Job Numbers Show a College Degree Is Still Worth it
According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data only 3.9 percent of college graduates over the age of 25 are unemployed. In comparison, only 7.9 percent of Americans with an associate’s degree or only a few college courses under their belt are unemployed. For Americans with just a high school diploma the number jumps to 8.1 percent. Unsurprisingly, the highest unemployment numbers are for high school dropouts—13 percent are jobless

Oregon’s Bold Plan For Tuition-Free College

On the day federal legislators let student loan interest rates double, Oregon’s legislators passed a bill to make student loans obsolete.
The proposal is really only a tiny, tentative first step in that direction–calling for a committee to decide to create a pilot project–but it’s nonetheless a conjunction of many inspiring rarities: A fresh idea, passed swiftly and unanimously, bringing real progress to increasingly crushing student debt. And it all started, fittingly enough, in a classroom full of debt-ridden college seniors at Portland State University.

And they’ve adopted the Toms buy-one-give-one model to address the condom shortage in the developing world: every time you buy a Sir Richard’s condom, the company sends one to community organizations like Partners in Health in Haiti.
