An estimated 18 million people are now using Google+, Google’s answer to social-networking behemoth Facebook. The quick growth Google+ has had is remarkable, but its “circle system” to distinguish between people has left many asking the same thing: Who’s a “friend,” who’s an “acquaintance,” and who’s a stranger in the age of web-based relationships?
“I’ve found it pretty much impossible,” says Nancy Baym, professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas and author ofPersonal Connections in the Digital Age. “I have two circles named ‘Nearest and Dearest’ and 'Everyone.’ That’s the best I can do, but even who goes in Nearest and Dearest is a little ambiguous.” Baym says assigning titles to relationships has always been difficult, but adds that the uncertainty contributes to relationship fluidity, and thus usefulness. Online social networking is forcing us to confront the strangeness that’s always been there, and the results can be sticky. “In everyday practice, relationships tend to be fairly ambiguous,” she says. “When our computer systems force us to categorize these people, it forces us to butt up against that ambiguity, and it isn’t easy. It’s easier to never have to categorize.”

According to a new report from Reuters and Westlaw, federal judges have granted at least 24 search warrants since 2008 allowing law enforcement officials to snoop around people’s Facebook accounts. Some of the warrants sought things as innocuous as status updates, but others gave access to friend requests, photos, event calendars and personal messages.

I told you last month why I thought everyone should get off Facebook, and it turns out people listened. Though the social networking behemoth continues creeping toward 700 million global users, six million Americans quit the site in the month of May. That’s the first time Facebook has lost U.S. users in over a year. The site also posted losses in Canada, the U.K., Norway, and Russia, while most of its gains came in countries in the developing world, including Mexico and India.
What explains the stunted growth? Several things, the first of which is a growing concern about privacy amongst Facebook users. It was inevitable that a social site that turned its users into a commodity for advertisers would eventually be a turnoff for some, and that looks to be happening at Facebook en masse. Beyond that, competing sites like Twitter, which demand less engagement and information from users, are also siphoning away some former Facebook loyalists.
