Make Your Own Meals: Hone Your Food Photo Skills
Today’s task is to spend some time online learning how to take better food photos with your phone. Since so many of us virtually share our food with our friends, let’s make sure to do justice to the awesome meals we’re making.
A few weeks ago, we asked you to help us create a cooking soundtrack as part of this month’s Make Your Own Meals challenge. We got a bunch of awesome suggestions—mostly upbeat jams to help turn your kitchen into a party zone. We chose our favorite recommendations and compiled them as GOOD’s “Make Your Own Meals” Playlist.
Make Your Own Meals: Use Fresh Herbs
Herbs often get left off of shopping lists because they seem nonessential or complicated (“I bought these chocolate mint leaves, now what the heck do I do with them?”). On top of that, herbs can wilt quickly without special attention. But remember, these botanicals pack a ton of flavor and, in some cases, even have healing properties.
Today’s challenge is to seek out a specialty market you’ve never been to and hit the shopping aisles. You surely already know that vibrant immigrant communities offer some of the best neighborhood restaurants and food carts around. But it doesn’t end there. Region-specific grocery stores offer a wide range of imported ingredients you can’t find anywhere else.

For today’s challenge, we’re going to craft the best meal we can using only groceries procured from a nearby convenience store.
