Murals and Math: One School’s Solution to Graffiti
- Ellie Balk wrote in Education, New York and News
The act of painting murals is empowering. Once a student makes a mark on a wall, it becomes his or hers. When you walk down the busy street of Graham Ave, almost every wall is covered in random tags. We help the students create public art that means something and has significance. Students living in Brooklyn need this kind of connection to their communities because when the students invest in their communities, the communities invest in them. These murals are also made for the neighborhood. The results are not only beautiful images, but also sparked conversations.
Actor Zachary Quinto came out as gay—not via a proclamation or a curated press statement, but by using one little phrase in an interview with New York: “As a gay man…”
True, New York could have trumpeted the news on their cover, but that was likely part of Quinto’s strategy; he must have known that the relatively highbrow magazine would act more nonchalant than, say, US Weekly. Here’s to casual.

More connectivity also means more opportunity for creative apps to improve the transit system. These, the MTA decided to crowdsource.
Why My Lease Says ‘Be a Good Neighbor’
- Adele Peters wrote in New York City, Brooklyn and Community
I don’t think I had specific expectations of neighborliness when I first moved from California to New York. If someone had asked me, I would have probably guessed that things in my new neighborhood wouldn’t have been that different from parts of the Bay Area; a steady flow of people moving in and out of apartments on the block, and people often passing each other on the street with heads down, without stopping to say hello.

Our contributing Business Editor Alex Goldmark found this protest-meets-Johnny Knoxville video about the laws and safety of bike lanes in New York City. He writes:
Here’s an outlandish protest video from Casey Neistat, professional viral video maker (of the Niestat Brothers show on HBO). In it, he films himself getting a ticket for not riding in the bike lane in New York City—an NYPD practice I brought to light on Transportation Nation, andGOOD a few months back.
