Because so many migrant workers are undocumented, it’s tough to pinpoint exactly how many there are in California. Estimates range from 250,000 to close to 1 million. And many workers don’t come alone—they bring their families. Today in Kern County, California, there are roughly 15,000 students in the migrant education program.
Some students come in May and are gone by the end of the summer. Others might start on time but won’t get connected to the migrant education program until January. There’s no guarantee that the same students will show up to every session, which makes it challenging for the teachers to make real progress. But that hasn’t stopped them from trying.
